Old estimator missed $80,000 on a bid (of $42,000). We got stuck with the job. Additional work was issued on the contract for us and the pricing I negotiated will cut our losses by 91%. In addition to this mitigation, I was able to guarantee $10,000 in additional work on two separate jobs with the same client by selling them on the idea that we were doing them a favor on the first project.

Sneaky estimator!!!

I deal with vendors from the other side, so I deal with the sales people that come to people like you for pricing. But I am fair. Since I bid jobs out, I usually have a benchmark of some sort. If 2 are in one area of cost, but the other comes in way low or way high, I call them on it and talk to them about it. I'll ask if they missed something, or do not understand the job completely. Some times they just either really want the job (lower than others), or the job is just not for them (higher than others).

Believe it or not these did come with hard and soft tops, so the door probably helped with egress/ingress.

What is this top you speak of?

I'm a PM - I can't stand estimating. Previously I would estimate and always discount any bids received that were out of the realm of possibility (a bid for $10k as opposed to three bids around $50k) unless they confirmed their scope and inclusions/exclusions.

But yeah, the guy they had here before I started must have picked his proposals out of a fucking fishbowl - they were all over the place.

It's hard to find pictures, but the Cobras did come with these mounting points for a soft top.

Sorry, I read that as you were the estimator since you referred to the old estimator. Thought maybe you had replaced that last person. PM is even better! LOL

Believe it or not, that's not a one-off oddity. It's a Dunham Coach Corvorado, made famous in Super Fly:

PMs are here to get the job done for as little profit fade as possible. Estimators are here to tell the PM "you will have profit fade".
